CHAPTER EIGHT
EVA GLANCED AT the time, hating herself for doing it even as her eyes were drawn once again to the hands on the old wooden grandfather clock in the far corner of Jossâs new office.
Three forty-seven. Exactly four minutes after she had last looked.
And at least twenty minutes after she had expected to see Joss back in the office.
He had been on a half-nine flight, which the live arrivals board told her had arrived at Heathrow at thirteen thirty-three. If heâd jumped into the car that she had booked for him he should definitely be here by now.
It was professional concern, she told herself. He had a meeting at four oâclock. Sheâd told him he would be cutting it fine if they were to leave to pick up his father this evening and get to the house, but heâd insisted that he would be there in time.
Her eagerness to see him was nothing to do with the way she had lain in bed awake, remembering the hard press of his body and the gentle touch of his lips in that hotel suite in Milan. Thinking about the night they had spent together in her flat, knowing that he was just down the hall. Knowing she could bump into him on the way to the bathroom and get a glimpse of those firm, toned abs and muscular thighs.
She shook off the thought. No, it was absolutely nothing to do with that at all.
A noise behind her made her jump, and she turned to see Joss striding through the office, familiar holdall in hand, glancing at his watch.
âI know, I knowâyou told me it would be close.â
âAnd you told me youâd make it. I never doubted you,â she lied.
He came up to her desk and kissed her on the cheek, and it was only as the blush rose that she remembered he was only doing what would be expected from a man whoâd just spent a few nights away from his fiancée. He was performing for their audience, whoâa brief glance out of the corner of her eye told herâwere appreciative of his efforts.
âI told him youâd meet him in his office,â she said after a pregnant pause, suddenly struck with stage fright, unsure of her lines.
âGreat. Iâll drop this bag and head over there now. Weâll still be out of here by six. Promise.â
She smiled and waited for him to walk away, but his gaze hadnât broken from hers and the ghost of a smile passed over his lips.
âDid you miss me?â he asked.
She resisted the urge to draw in a shocked breath, keeping her breathing deliberately slow and even. Was he playing with her? Was this part of their act or was he really asking herâthe real her, not the fake fiancée?
âNot even a tiny bit,â she said, with a proper smile of her own.
Any eager ears in the office could put that down to normal relationship banter, she decided. And it was worth it to see the expression on Jossâs face.
